Aachen - Burtscheid: History and location
The Art Hotel is located in Burtscheid, a district south of Aachen. In 997, Emperor Otto III founded a Benedictine monastery, which was endowed with cleared land from royal property by Henry II in 1018. In 1138, Conrad III granted the monastery imperial immediacy, which lasted until 1802. In 1220, the monastery was converted into a Cistercian monastery. The Lords of Merode, who lived in the neighboring Frankenberg Castle, had been exercising the bailiwick rights since the 12th century until they were acquired by the abbess in 1649. Jurisdiction over the village residents has been exercised since 1351 by the Imperial City of Aachen, represented by a Meier, in accordance with a contract. In 1598 and 1614, Protestants who had fled from Aachen settled in the Burtscheid area and founded their own communities with the abbess's permission. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the abbesses encouraged the establishment of businesses and thus entered into competition with Aachen. In 1802, Burtscheid lost its independence and, via France, came under Prussia in 1815. In 1946, it became part of North Rhine-Westphalia. The small town of Burtscheid, with around 16,000 inhabitants, was incorporated into the city of Aachen in 1896.

Very close to the Art Hotel is the Aachen Forest, which is ideal for long walks.
